I just wanted to give another big thank you to everyone that helped with the George Hrab gig last month.
It goes without saying that none of this would have been possible without Geo wanting to come to Ireland. The fact that he did and was the nicest person you could ever hope to meet just was amazing. But as regards the Irish thanks yous, here goes:
Sorry, no aliens today
A NASA scientist claims to have identified signs of extraterrestrial bacteria in meteorites…
Look familiar ? Yeah, it’s been all over the interwebs for the last two days.
The only proper comment on it you can read here, on PZ Meyers’ blog
Nuff said.
Lets just slip those news in there…
Spotted in this mornings’ Metro, page 11, in a small corner box:
TAKING ibuprofen could cut the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease by a third, according to new research. Taking the over-the-counter drug two or three times a week may reduce inflammation in the brain that contributes to Parkinson’s, scientists from Harvard School of Public Health said.
That’s the entire text – no further refernce provided and actually a bit misleading as crammed into the middle of another health related post.

1023 Campaign Overdose hits Dublin (Airport)
Fresh off the plane from Manchester, having spent a hectic fun-filled weekend at the QED Conference, some Irish Skeptics did us proud and overdosed on homeopathic Belladonna in Dublin Airport:

George Hrab in Exchange Dublin
Well this is one way to celebrate one whole year of skepticism in Dublin:
Yes, it is true – Dublin is one of the stops on George’s fabulous Golden Ticket Tour.
8pm 12th February 2011 in Exchange Dublin. The Exchange is a non-alcohol space but everyone is welcome to bring snacks and any non-alcoholic drinks along!
There is no charge on the door, as George is very kindly doing this gig for free and we are using this space for free. However any donations you wish to give towards the costs of this venture - we will not be too polite to refuse you. This money is going towards funding just this gig and no money will be kept as profit.
We Need To Talk About Jim
As you may or may not know Jim Corr was on the Late Late Show last week. Maybe you heard about it online afterwards like I did, or maybe you are a dinosaur who actually watched it live on a television when it was aired by a TV station. For those of you interested the parts with Jim are up on youtube.
In what seemed to be a lets-laugh-at-the-nutjobs special, Jim shared his appearance with googly eye climate change denier Lord Monckton (seriously, the hell is up with his face?), but he really is another topic for another day. Jim Corr is an Irish celebrity so it is our duty as Irish Skeptics to tackle him and his nonsense. We can leave the British aristocracy to the British.

Is it rude to put an email on a public forum? I hadn’t time to reword and post. Unsure why I got an email… But looks interesting? Shall do some googling later.

The times they are a’changing
Hi all,
Once again there is going to be a bit of a shake up in the land of skepticireland.com and the Skeprechauns.
Due to work demands etc. some people will be stepping back and others will be forging forward to keep delivering you the Irish content you have come to expect from our mythical beings and mere mortals alike!
I will be stepping into the breach to look after the website and take care of podcasts. If you want to contact me regarding these in the mean time you can catch me @DJBexbot on Twitter or through the Irish Skeptics in the Pub, Dublin Facebook page.
What’s the most Inspirational Factual Video?
For me, Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot” represents the most inspirational and poetic statement of fact that’s been recorded on video. I’m sure most of our readers are familiar with it, if not take a few minutes to enjoy it.
